Romania's retail market remained active in Q1 2026. New openings added 12,600 sq m, bringing total modern stock to nearly 4.8 million sq m. The pipeline points to further growth, with approximately 126,000 sq m under construction for 2026 and over 200,000 sq m planned for 2027–2028.

International brands continued to choose Romania as an entry market. BIPA, Mr. DIY, Chili's, and Orchestra all opened in Q1, with Lululemon, Normal, and Springfield expected to follow later in the year.

The quarter's defining moment, however, was the announced acquisition of Carrefour Romania by Paval Holding — owners of the Dedeman DIY chain — a transaction that will significantly reshape the retail landscape once closed.
